New York, NY – Families in Israel have faced a constant barrage of loss since October 7. Now, US friends can come alongside individual families who have tremendous emotional and financial challenges.
At the request of the Israeli Ministry of Defense, Friends of the Israel Defense Forces, the IDF’s sole authorized partner in the US, developed the After the Shiva initiative to bridge the painful gap that follows the traditional seven-day mourning period, known as shiva.
While communities rally around grieving families in those early days, the months and years that follow can be isolating and financially difficult. The After the Shiva program ensures these families are not left alone.
A Lifeline of Compassion and Connection
After the Shiva pairs US-based FIDF donors with bereaved Israeli families, fostering heartfelt, personal relationships that span continents. Over the course of three years, donors provide financial assistance and emotional support through video calls, messages, holiday gifts, and meaningful gestures on holidays, birthdays, and anniversaries.
“This program is about more than giving—it’s about connecting,” said Steve Weil, CEO of FIDF. “It’s about standing with these families who have sacrificed everything and showing them they are not alone—not today, not tomorrow, not ever.”
Tailored Support, Personal Bonds
Donors are matched with families based on shared values, backgrounds, and specific preferences—such as connections to certain IDF units or the presence of widows and orphans. Each donor receives a biography of the fallen hero and details about the family’s needs, while the families are given the opportunity to learn about those helping them and are able to build relationships through ongoing communication and visits when possible.
FIDF oversees the entire process, including:
• Coordinating the first video meeting between donors and families
• Facilitating ongoing connection through holidays, birthdays, and memorial dates
• Delivering thoughtful gifts year-round—from Purim baskets to Rosh Hashanah (Jewish New Year) vouchers
• Providing updates, photos, and stories from the families
• Offering anonymous giving options through a dedicated fund for those who prefer privacy
Each contribution directly funds gifts, support services, and essential financial aid tailored to each family’s circumstances.
Join the Mission – Befriend a Fallen Hero Family
This transformative program enables donors not only to support but also to stand beside families during their darkest hours, forming enduring, meaningful relationships rooted in compassion and gratitude.
